CHAMBERSTICK 1720-1740

As with most brass candlesticks this has a broad base and handle to help light the way to ones chamber.  The round base supports an incised candle socket which also features a ribbed ring.  A nicely designed knob on the stem adjusts the height of the candle. Note  that the handle design for finger and thumb which helps to stabilize the chamberstick when it is carried. Small repairs (TEKE)

HANGING GREASE (CRUISE) LAMP -REDWARE INSERT 1680-1780

The grease lamp was the earliest supplementary lighting form which began in the ancient world and was common in Europe and America. The pan was filed with grease , fat scraps,  fish oil, vegetable oil or whale oil. A simple wick or rag fed from the fuel. This is a nicely made grease lamp with a quality twist hanger. The redware insert was added at a later date.

UNUSUAL CONE SHAPED FLUID LAMP- EARLY 19th CENTURY

This early 19th century cone shape fluid lamp has a distinctive look and is in excellent condition. Note the brass burner, hanging hook and reflector - all original. Outstanding condition.(LKDE)

ADJUSTABLE SPIRAL CANDLE HOLDER-MID 18th CENTURY TO EARLY 19th CENTURY

An extremely interesting and unique wrought iron spiral candlestick. It is extremely well made with many distinguishing features. The carrying hook and the candle holder have nice form with intriguing finials. The drip pan or base has a wonderful decorative  design, which is supported by nicely shaped legs. One of the legs is numbered which probably indicates that it came out of a collection. Note the black paint. In his book MAKING FIRE & LIGHT IN THE HOME PRE-1820, John Caspall talks about black being used on candlesticks of this type during this period (p. 160). (ALDK)

*UNIQUE ca:1850 PAINTED CANDLE BOX WITH HANGERS & HA

An uncommon ca:1850 candle box with atypical caring handles, original hand forged latch and forged hangers on the back which permit the box to be hung on a chimney or wall. The box  has old red paint  over an older blue and is in excellent condition. (BAKE)

CANDLE STAND 1740-1760

A nicely designed and well made candle stand whose post holds a movable two candle arm utilizing a peg and hole method for the vertical movement. The unique shape of the arm is attractive and functional which adds to the charm of the table. Note that the finials on the ends of the arm are similar to the finale on the post. The beautifully incised  drip tray houses the post employing a wedge at the bottom and also houses the mortised and incised turned splayed legs. The stand is in excellent condition and has no repairs.

ALPINE CANDLE HOLDER -EARLY TO MID 19th CENTURY

Candle holder with provision for two candles. The ring with the long spring allows for varying diameters of candle. It would also accommodate oil or tallow- soaked twisted rope-like material such as flax as a substitute for candles. It is said that the base held water to extinguish any sparks. This lamp was obviously used extensively. Note the loss and wear on the base. 8"H (ALTK)

*CANDLE/RUSH LIGHT FINISHED BY A WHITESMITH 18th c.

Whitesmithing developed as a speciality of blacksmithing in the 1700s, when extra time was given to filing and polishing certain products.
As you can see this particular candle stand was finished by a whitesmith were his manual skills in filing, turning and polishing produced a smooth finish. Note that the candle can rotate 360 degrees. Note also the overall design and the outstanding condition of the candle stand which reflects the expertise of the maker. (KODK)

*ADJUSTABLE DOUBLE CANDLE FLOOR CANDLE STAND - 18th CENTURY

This is a different early to mid 18th century WI floor candle stand. While we have all seen double candle stands, this form is quite unique  with a cone and a cylinder shape candle holder. Note the twist on the arm of the cone shape candle holder as well as the tabs and drip pan on the cylinder candle holder . Note also the rush holder, the friction spring grip, penny feet and the "crook" type lifting ring. Excellent condition with appropriate ware. (BHOE)
