TRAMMEL (1740-1800) WITH GREASE LAMP(1700-1730)

Trammels of this size were used for smaller utensils such as grease or pan  lamps, candle holders, cruises and small tea kettles. This is a well used trammel that is in great condition. The adjustable length is 27 1/2" to 40". (LETA)
This pan or grease lamp is extremely well made with the twist on the arm and the one piece construction.  The pan lamp or grease lamp was filled with grease or oil and in order to use this lamp a hempen or vegetable fibre wick was inserted through a central hole in a small disc of cork or wood. The shallow pan was then filled with oil and the wick would float freely in the pan. The pan was then suspended from nail or trammel.

  PIERCED 19th CENTURY TIN LANTERN- CATHEDRAL WINDOW DESIGN

A pierced tin lantern with a unique cathedral window design. The punched holes limited the light but shielded the light from winds and drafts. In addition these “barn” lanterns were in a hay- strewn barn.Note the 3 windows and the tabbed candle holder.(TLLK)

WI HANGING CANDLE HOLDER with RUSH HOLDER- 18th CENTURY

An interesting well made 18th century wrought iron hanging candle holder with a rush light holder.  Note the twisted shaft and the rat tail hanger. Excellent condition.

*CANDLE/RUSH LIGHT FINISHED BY A WHITESMITH 18th c.

Whitesmithing developed as a speciality of blacksmithing in the 1700s, when extra time was given to filing and polishing certain products.
As you can see this particular candle stand was finished by a whitesmith were his manual skills in filing, turning and polishing produced a smooth finish. Note that the candle can rotate 360 degrees. Note also the overall design and the outstanding condition of the candle stand which reflects the expertise of the maker. (KODK)

VERY RARE ARTICULATING HAND FORGED WALL MOUNTED LIGHTING DEVICE

Elbow jointed extension holders were mounted to work benches, chairs,  walls, posts, mantles and gave the owner maximum flexibility in using the light from a single candle. As a result, the design of such lights was varied. While some used clamps to attach the light, this design used a mantle, pole, wall etc. This design permit height, rotation and extension adjustments. A great example of human creativity. Found in the attic an 18th century home in Ipswich, Mass. (BEEDET)
