ADJUSTABLE SPIRAL CANDLE HOLDER-MID 18th CENTURY TO EARLY 19th CENTURY

An extremely interesting and unique wrought iron spiral candlestick. It is extremely well made with many distinguishing features. The carrying hook and the candle holder have nice form with intriguing finials. The drip pan or base has a wonderful decorative  design, which is supported by nicely shaped legs. One of the legs is numbered which probably indicates that it came out of a collection. Note the black paint. In his book MAKING FIRE & LIGHT IN THE HOME PRE-1820, John Caspall talks about black being used on candlesticks of this type during this period (p. 160). (ALDK)
