HEARTH BROOM 1700-1820

SOMETIMES CALLED AN INDIAN BROOM. THIS HEARTH BROOM WAS USUALLY MADE FROM BIRCH  SAPLINGS. THE LOWER END WAS SPLINTERED  UPWARD AND THE RESIDUAL CENTER REMOVED.  SIMILAR SPLINTERS WERE THEN CUT DOWN FROM ABOVE, BENT DOWN OVER THE LOWER END AND TIED. IN THIS CASE A SPLINT WAS USED  IN A NICE PATTERN. JUST A GREAT EXAMPLE IN WONDERFUL CONDITION. (LTK)
