Wall Hanging Spill Holder ca:1820

Twisted tubes of paper or pine shavings , called SPILLS, were used to transfer flame in lighting lamps, pipes and fires. Special planes were made to simplify the production of wooden spills. Slivers of wood called SPLINTS were also used to transfer fire. This early painted hanging container held the spills and/or splint. (CETE)
