WILLIAM AND MARY COUNTRY CANDLE STAND- NEW ENGLAND ca:1720-1750

A William and Mary painted stand with galleried round top set on a ball ,ring and vase turned columnar pedestal. Sometimes called a platform stand due to the thick base sitting on sculptured splayed legs. Small tables like this were first made in the 17th century. Popularly called candle stands today. Simple construction was all important in rural cabinet making but is often misunderstood today. A table such as this was purely functional; now its country look seems highly decorative. (LADKE)
