Wrought steel table candle holder, early to mid 19th century was an adaptation of the spring grip principal from the rush and splint holders. It is sometimes confused with rush holders and also referred to as an Alpine Candle Holder. In some books (EARLY LIGHTING, THE RUSHLIGHT CLUB) it is dated ca:1750. This ornate example with it leaf drip pan was finished to a very high standard. Note the precision of the swirls, the turnings on the shaft, the precision of the edges and  the rat tail on the carrying grip. etc.
