PAINTED WALL HANGING/TABLE TOP SPILL HOLDER ca: 1820

Description

Twisted tubes of paper or pine shavings , calledSPILLS, were used to transfer the flame from one lighting instrument to another instrument (i.e. from the fire to a candle, from one candle to another etc.). Special planes were made to simplify the production of wooden spills. Slivers of wood called SPLINTS were also used to transfer fire. This early painted hanging or table top container held the spills and/or splints. What is unusual about this spill holder is that I was CARVED FROM ONE PIECE OF WOOD. Beautifully done and in great condition (TAKTEU/0EDETT) Dimensions: 10 3/8”H, 3” x3 1/4” Base SOLD
