Description
This is a most unusual piece, an American, Southern painted tinder box. A ca:1840 hanging tinder box made with southern pine utilizing cut nails in the original red paint. Note the lollipop with the hanging hole, the scrolled front of the box and the sculpted skirt.
This type of tinder box was usually hung by the fireplace and held the flint, striker and tinder. Unlike more common tinder boxes, it was not used to light fires in it but the tinder was placed in the fireplace where the striking was done. Extremely rare and unique. 10”H, 4 7/8” W
