WIND MILL WEIGHT 1850-1930

Description

There is a wonderful book titled WINDMILL WEIGHTS by MILT SIMPSON which includes the history of windmills and how indispensable the windmill was from the 1850s to the 1930s. It also outlines the role of a windmill weight to counterbalance the weight of the wheel of the wheel or to govern uniform speed. He also discusses the evolution of the weight from a lump of iron to something beautiful which is now considered a form of American folk art. This particular weight is discussed on page 57 of his book which he called a “highly stylized, proud, full bodied figure, Known by collectors as the rainbow tail”.
