WILLIAM AND MARY PAINTED BALL FOOT DESK ca:1700

Description

A William and Mary ball foot desk of diminutive size and magnificent design. The slanted desk lid opens to reveal cubbyholes, five visible drawers, two secret drawers and a defining slide to access a well. The dovetailed case below the slant-front lid and the well features two small dovetailed drawers over two full width dovetailed drawers standing on large robustly turned ball feet. The knobs on the interior drawers are original. The period engraved cotter pin brasses on the case drawers were probably introduced ca:1720-1750. The desk lid when open is held by two unique scrolled arms with fulcrum centers. The desk is in remarkably intact condition with very minor repairs (lip on drawer etc). The paint is a mixture of original red and later 19th century red paint.(BRKDET/LRETE) Dimensions: H 39”, W 33 1/4” D 18 1/4”, Writing H 30”
