EARLY TO MID 18th CENTURY WOODEN TINDER BOX

Description

We have always been fascinated by tinder boxes. The variety of forms is extensive and quiet creative. One of the most interesting is the early wooden tinder boxes from the 18th century that were used and yet survived to this day. This is a great example of an English tinder box which was made with English oak and utilized t-nails. As usual the box is divided into two compartments. One compartment holds the fire starting tools (flint, steel, damper, tow etc.) and the other compartment holds the spills etc. The box retains its original shellacked surface The box can be hung utilizing the inverted heart cutout (note the tight age split at the top) or can stand or lie on a table. The box comes complete with striker, flint, damper and tow. Not surprisingly the damper has been replaced. (THODK) List Price: $1050
