Painted Wall Hanging Spill Holder ca:1820

Description

Twisted tubes of paper or pine shavings called SPILLS wereused to transfer flame in lighting lamps, pipes and fires. Special planes were made to simplify the production of wooden spills. Slivers of wood called SPLINTS were also used to transfer fire. This early painted hanging container held the spills and/or splints. This particular spill holder was dug out (lot of work) and the tin hanger may have been attached at a later date using square nails.
