In colonial homes, free-flowing grains of salt began with placing the salt box near the fire for drying out. In damp, cool weather salt absorbs moisture from the air. Cooks in colder places used to help it stay dry by keeping it near a fire, stove or covered.
This particular 18th century walnut salt box is dovetailed and has a nice size dovetailed divided drawer with the original pull. The top is slanted and has the original single hinge. May be used on a counter or hung on the wall. Attractive and in great condition.
