WROUGHT STEEL TABLE CANDLEHOLDER-EARLY 19th CENTURY

Description

This wrought steel table candle holder dates from early to mid 19th century and was an adaptation of the spring grip principal from the rush and splint holders. It is sometimes confused with rush holders and also referred to as an Alpine Candle Holder. This ornate example with it leaf drip pan was finished to a very high standard. Note the precision of the swirls the turnings on the shaft the precision of the edges and the rat tail on the carrying grip. The ring with the long spring allows for varying diameters of candles. It would also accommodate tallow soaked twisted rope-like material such as flax as a substitute for candles (THE RUSHLIGHT AND RELATED HOLDERS BY ROBERT ASHLEY). The tray at the base could hold water which would extinguish any sparks. Outstanding example. (AHET) Dimensions: 18″H 6 3/4″ x 5″ Base List Price: $525
